Church of San Biagio

Description Taking the Piazza Marconi in front of the railway station in Agrigento as a starting-point, the Viale della Vittoria can be followed in a southeasterly direction to the Church of San Biagio at the eastern end of the Rock of Athene (Rupe Atenea, 351m/1,152ft, where a fine view can be enjoyed). This small church was built in the 12th century under Norman rule using antique building materials. It stands on the site of the Temple of Demeter, which would have been erected about 480-460 B.C. The foundations and parts of the north wall are to be seen behind the church apse. Also of note are two round altars to the north of the building which possibly served as "bothros" (sacrificial graves).
