Popularly known as the Palace of the Winds, Hawa Mahal was costructed in 1799. Significantly, Hawa Mahal is one of the Jaipur's major landmarks, although it is actually little more than a façade. This five-storey buildings, which looks out over the main street of the old city, is perfect model of Rajput carftsmanship with its pink, semioctagonal and delicately honeycombed sandstone facades. Hawa Mahal was especially created for the regal queens princess to watch the processions on the streets.
Veronica August, a traveller from Europe, said “ Amidst the local bazaar of the Jaipur, I found a palace which silentely stands on wheels on time. I wondered this palace would have seen all. Made in red sandstone adds beauty to the mystic edifice.”
